GIS & Mapping
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. GIS is rooted in the science of geography to integrate many types of data into analyzing spatial location and organizing informational layers to produce maps, 3-D scenes, and infographics. MCCOG uses this unique capability to manage most data for Madison County and other communities within their Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA). MCCOG also has the ability to provide advanced services in coordination with GIS technologies for deepening the understandings of patterns and relationships that help community, organization, and business leaders make smarter decisions as well as improve local residents’ quality of life.
Land Use & Design
Local built environments are as valuable as their natural resources, so they should be managed carefully by their communities to ensure growth patterns are consistent with residents’ needs and desires. Land use is also closely associated with economic development potential and community development/redevelopment opportunities. MCCOG has the expertise to identify current conditions and provide roadmaps for the futures of Madison County’s communities. In addition, MCCOG can support communities by managing and developing local land use and development ordinances, design standards, and administrative oversight procedures to enable communities to adequately manage their local land use and growth.
Transportation
The complex relationship between land use and transportation is a key factor in maintaining economic vitality. Land use must be adjacent to transportation corridors to maximize the movement of people and goods, improve residents’ quality of life, as well as maintain a community’s unique sense of place. Even though MCCOG is the primary transportation planning organization for the Anderson-Madison County region, the agency also collects, analyzes, and reports information to guide local transportation decision-making, project development, project management, and innovative solutions.
